Reports from various sources, including Turkish news outlet Anadolu, indicate that Niger’s junta has taken the step of cutting off electricity and water supplies to the French Embassy in Niamey. This move comes with a reported prohibition on food deliveries as well.
Similar actions have also been reported at the French consulate locations in Zinder, Tera, Oualam, Ayorou, Dosso, Niamey, and Filingue.
Elh Issa Hassoumi Boureima, President of the National Support Committee for the CNSP, has issued a directive to partners of the French bases in Niger, urging them to halt the supply of water, electricity, and food products. He was quoted as saying, “We ask Nigelec and SPEN (SEEN) to cut off water and electricity in the French Embassy, in the French consulates of Zinder and Niamey. In addition, any partners who continue to help the French in the process of supplying goods and services will be seen as enemies of the sovereign people.”
These actions were taken following a military junta’s ultimatum given to Sylvain Itte, the French ambassador, to leave Niger within two days. The relationship between the junta in Niger and several western powers, including ECOWAS (the West African bloc), has deteriorated since the coup that took place on July 26.
However, French authorities have swiftly rejected the military rulers’ order against their ambassador, asserting that France does not recognize the authority of the junta.
