Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah of Sokoto Diocese has criticized the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that Nigerians witnessed the worst phase of corruption under his leadership.
Speaking at the 60th call to bar anniversary celebration of legal icon Aare Afe Babalola in Ado Ekiti, Kukah emphasized that corruption existed prior to Buhari’s administration but was amplified during his tenure.
Kukah highlighted the various dimensions of corruption, including moral and financial aspects. He also acknowledged the work of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, who has extensively written about the corruption that took place under the Buhari administration.
The bishop further expressed concern that Nigeria was sharing its sovereignty, as guaranteed by the constitution, with bandits and other terrorists. He lamented that the current state of affairs has caused a decline in national pride, with even the President and Senators losing their enthusiasm for being Nigerian. Kukah described the country as being held hostage by those who pose a threat to democracy and the nation itself.
Kukah also addressed the issue of faith in the judiciary, noting that many Nigerians have lost trust in the institution. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the judiciary and other institutions in the country, stating that Nigeria should not assume it is a fully functional democracy but rather a work in progress.
The bishop urged Nigerians to focus on rebuilding the nation after the alleged mess left by the previous administration. Regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the election, Kukah expressed confidence that Nigerians have moved past the “ugly past” and are ready to rebuild the country.
