Nigerians react as Buhari mourns football icon, Pele

Backlash as Nigeria president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) mourns Brazilian Star and legend of all time, Pele.

Buhari had expressed grief over the death of Pele, who died on the 29th of December, 2022 after being diagnosed with colon cancer, lead to respiratory illness and later took his life.

Pele was regarded as the great football icon, he died at the age of 82. While condolence trails over the death of the icon, Buhari’s condolences was not found wanting.

Mourning the football legendary in a statement he shared in the early of today, 31 December reads, “Pele made a huge contribution to the development of football, and sports generally. He had an enormous generosity of spirit and humility, despite his greatness as a footballer and sportsman, and built bridges across nations, races and even religions. May his soul rest in peace.” Buhari stated.

However, reactions trails from Nigerians who knew what it takes to be an icon. Following Buhari’s condolences, some of the social media users reacted.

Via Facebook platform, as identified, Charles Ogbu said, “While Pele will be remembered for his contribution to the development of football and humanity, you, Muhammadu Buhari will go down in history for inflicting the highest maximum damage to Nigeria and Nigerians in your soon-to-be 8 year rule.

A shame, is it not?”

“Pele is being remembered for his sole contribution to making happy by using the beautiful game of football we hope we can hold unto something to remember you for good after you might left office?” asked Paul Yakubu
