The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria will start paying five per cent tax on call, SMS, and data services to boost revenue.
According to report gathered, the Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated this at the stakeholders’ forum organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC in Abuja on Thursday, 28th of July, 2022.
Ahmed, who was represented at the event by Mr Musa Umar, the Assistant Director, Tax and Policy, stated that some Africa countries, which includes; Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, among others, had all wage into the same revenue generation tactics, and such pattern can as well be embraced by Nigerian to generate more income in the country.
According to her “The issue of revenue is not something that we need to shy away from, our revenue can no longer take care of our needs as a country.
“Also Nigeria is no longer making enough money in oil revenue hence the attention is shifting to Non-revenue sectors.”
