Nigerian Navy Saves More Than 250 People From Capsized Boat in Rivers State

Nigerian Navy (NN) officers from Naval Security Station (NSS) 023, which is stationed near Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State, successfully saved over 250 people from a capsized passenger boat.

The unfortunate vessel, MV PRECIOUS EMMANUEL, set sail from a small market in the Bayelsa State area of Sangana and was traveling towards Rivers State when it came into rough seas and collided with a wreck, damaging its hull and caused it to capsize.

Notably, the three-deck wooden boat built in the area and known as the “Large Cotonou Boat” capsized, lacking any lifesaving supplies, and with no life jackets worn by any of the occupants.

No lives were lost because of the watchful eyes and prompt, professional action of NN personnel who launched a rescue effort.

This rescue mission is in accordance with Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla’s Strategic Directive, which states that “a safe and secure maritime environment in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea is the strategic end state of NN operations.”

The NN also wants local marine operators to know how important lifejackets, life buoys, and other life-saving gear are. The availability and appropriate use of such equipment is essential to maritime life safety. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
