‘Nigeria is beautiful’ Peter Obi urges FG to promote domestic tourism

The Former Anambra state Governor, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, has urged Nigerian leaders to set the tone for tourism development by prioritising holidays within the country, rather than abroad.

In a statement on X page after speaking at the 2025 Domestic Tourism Conference in Enugu State, Obi said tourism remains one of Nigeria’s greatest untapped potentials to earn sustainable foreign exchange.

He cited Turkey as an example, noting that the country generated over $61 billion from tourism in 2024, with 62 million visitors creating millions of jobs and supporting small businesses.

By contrast, Obi said Nigeria attracts less than 10 percent of that figure, but could earn more than $20 billion in revenue if it achieved even a third of Turkey’s numbers.

Obi stressed that leadership commitment, security, and investment are key to unlocking Nigeria’s tourism sector.

“Nothing is stopping our own President from hosting holidays in places like Zamfara, Cross River, Kebbi, Yobe or Plateau. Nigeria has what it takes to be a global tourism destination. What we lack is vision, leadership, and commitment,” he said.

He added: “Nigeria is beautiful and our leaders must start showcasing Nigeria’s beauty to the world.”
