Nigeria, Germany set to boost economic, energy cooperation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, held talks with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, in Berlin on Thursday, aiming to strengthen economic and energy partnerships between Nigeria and Germany.

Germany ranks as Nigeria’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the importance of their bilateral relationship.

During the meeting, the German Foreign Ministry emphasised energy collaboration as a central focus of their economic ties.

According to a post on Tuggar’s X handle, he stressed the urgency of expanding trade, especially in vital raw materials, and advocated for enhanced cooperation on labor migration between the two countries.

Tuggar wrote on X:

“Expanding cooperation in energy, trade, and migration remains central to Nigeria’s engagement with Germany.

“In Berlin, I met with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to strengthen our collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, vocational training, and critical minerals.

“I emphasised that Nigeria’s objective is to export talent—not people—by investing in skills development and creating opportunities at home.

“We also explored ways to align our shared priorities with sustainable outcomes that benefit both nations, particularly in managing migration and fostering innovation through strategic partnerships.”
