The Nigeria apex court suspended the 10th of February deadline for the swap of old naira notes with newly redesigned ones given by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN through it Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Recalled that the apex bank had moved the deadline earlier set for the expiration of the legal tender status of the old notes from on the 31st of January, 2023 to 10th of February, 2023 after the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, met with the Nigeria President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
However, below are some of the things to know about the Wednesday Supreme Court ruling over the naira notes:
- The Supreme Court verdict is a temporary halt; a suspension, and not a complete stop till fresh notice is brought out.
- The Governors of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States sued the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN and the Nigeria Federal Government at the Supreme Court.
- The temporary order on the naira notes was given by Justice Okoro of the Supreme Court.
- The next hearing of the naira case would be on 15th of February, 2023.
