The Netherlands has made history with the swearing-in of 38-year-old Rob Jetten as its youngest-ever Prime Minister and the first openly gay leader to hold the country’s highest office.
Jetten, a centrist from the Democrats 66 (D66) party, secured a surprise victory over Geert Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) in last October’s general election. He officially assumed office 117 days after the polls, succeeding Dick Schoof, whose government collapsed in the summer of 2025, triggering the snap election.
Jetten now leads a coalition government with the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). The coalition holds 66 of 150 parliamentary seats, meaning it will require opposition support to pass major legislation.
The new administration has pledged to significantly boost defence spending, committing billions of euros to meet NATO’s target of 5% of GDP for the military. It also plans to advance emissions cuts in the livestock sector as part of its broader climate agenda.
Jetten’s appointment marks a milestone in Dutch political history, both for his youth and his trailblazing role as the nation’s first openly gay prime minister.
