NEMA hosts campaign on fl00d preparedness, waste management in Bayelsa community

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has organised a one-day sensitisation and public awareness campaign on proper waste management and flood preparedness at Amasoma Community town hall in Southern Ijaw Local Government Council of Bayelsa State.

The rally was aimed to emphasise proper waste management and clearing of water channels to mitigate flood impacts.

Amasoma community has been predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to experience significant flooding this year.

This was made known via a post shared on the agency’s X handle on Tuesday, 30th of July, 2024.

The statement reads,

“On July 29, 2024, the NEMA South South Zone team, led by Zonal Coordinator Adebiyi Babatunde Razaq, organized a one-day sensitization and public awareness campaign on proper waste management and flood preparedness at Amasoma Community town hall in Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, Bayelsa State.

“The team was welcomed by Hon. Ayogoi Simeon, Director of SEMA, and local government Chairman Hon. Target I. Seigha, who expressed appreciation for choosing the flood-prone Amasoma community for this initiative.

“The campaign included a road walk through various community areas, distributing flyers and delivering messages on flood preparedness, waste management, and safety. At the palace of HRH Godwill Akedesuo, the paramount ruler of Amasoma, community leaders were urged to disseminate flood risk reduction and safety messages to their clans.

“The rally aimed to ensure grassroots-level preparation and spread early warning messages, emphasizing proper waste management and the clearing of water channels to mitigate flood impacts.

“A town hall meeting was held to discuss riverine, coastal, and flash flooding dangers and effective response strategies with community leaders, youth, women, and residents.
