The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Akure Medium Security Custodial Centre. During a standard gate search, officers discovered approximately four grams of Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, the drugs were tightly sealed in waterproof nylon and were allegedly intended for an inmate. The individuals involved were immediately arrested and transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution, as directed by the Controller-General of Corrections.
The Ondo State Controller of Corrections commended the officers’ vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to maintaining secure facilities and eradicating all forms of illicit substance trafficking within the correctional system nationwide.
The Command also issued a stern warning to the public and visitors that any attempts to compromise the security of custodial centres will be dealt with decisively. This incident follows a similar recent case in Kano, highlighting the continued efforts by the Nigerian Correctional Service to strengthen security against drug-related crimes.
