During an interactive session with the National Assembly joint committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, announced this development on Tuesday.

The committee, led by Senator Saliu Mustapha (APC -Kwara Central), inquired about the government’s strategies to address the escalating prices of food items and ensure affordability for the populace.

In response, Kyari revealed that they had received instructions and authorization from President Bola Tinubu to distribute 42,000 metric tons of various grains.

He stated, “We have received instructions and authorization from Mr. President to distribute 42,000 metric tons of assorted grains free of charge to the Nigerian population for immediate impact.”

“This directive came in mid-February. Currently, we are in the process of distribution, although I must emphasize that certain aspects of the operation cannot be made public. Nevertheless, numerous states have commenced receiving their allocated grains.”

“We are prioritizing distribution to state capitals initially due to the risks associated with potential foodstuff vandalism. We are collaborating closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies.”

“In addition, 58,500 metric tons of milled rice from major rice millers will also be introduced into the market to stabilize prices.”
