The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has debunked a purported press release shared on the Instagram handle of the Nigeria First Lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.
In the release shared on Aisha’s handle today, Tuesday, it was alleged that the old N500 and N1000 Naira notes should remain legal tender till 1st of May, 2023.
Debunking the news, the apex bank shared another press release, labelling the one posted by the First Lady, Aisha Buhari as ‘fake news’.
The CBN newly released article as signed by the director, said, “For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023.
“Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject. Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE verify any information from the correct sources before publication.”
As at the time of filing this report, the ‘fake’ release was still on Aisha Buhari’s verified Instagram page.
