The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched a Consumer Safety Club (NSCS) in the Government Day Secondary School, Gandu, Gombe State.
The club was launched to curb the rate of drug abuse in the state.
Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, through her representative, Gombe State Coordinator James Agada, addressed the alarming 14.4 percent drug abuse rate in the country.
He highlighted the need for proactive measures, she emphasized that the initiative aims to raise awareness among students about the serious dangers of drug abuse.
This was disclosed via a statement on the agency’s X handle on Thursday, 30th of January 2025.
The statement partly reads:
“NAFDAC Launches Consumer Safety Club to Tackle Drug Abuse in Gombe Schools.
“NAFDAC has inaugurated its Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) in Government Day Secondary School, Gandu, Gombe State, as part of its “Catch Them Young” initiative to combat drug abuse among young people.
“Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the Gombe State Coordinator Pharm. James Agada described the 14.4 per cent prevalence of drug abuse among Nigerians as ‘alarming’.
“She warned that the epidemic continues to destabilise families, weaken the workforce, and harm the economy. The initiative aims to sensitise students on the dangers of illicit drugs and equip them with the knowledge to make informed decisions. Prof Adeyeye encouraged teachers to collaborate with parents to identify behavioural issues, stressing that the combined effort of stakeholders is essential to reducing drug dependency among youth.
