NAFDAC advocates strengthened pharmacovigilance in Kano state

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in a bid to boost drug safety and patient care, has embarked on a mission to enhance pharmacovigilance in Kano State.

This initiative aligns with the National Pharmacovigilance Policy and Implementation Framework (2020), which seeks to institutionalize robust drug safety monitoring systems across Nigeria’s healthcare facilities.

A team of NAFDAC officers on April 23 paid an advocacy visit to Commissioner for Health, Kano, marking the official commencement of pharmacovigilance assessments in selected health institutions within the state.

According to NAFDAC in a statement on their X handle, the assessments, scheduled to take place from April 23 to 25, will cover key medical centers including the Infectious Disease Hospital Kano, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and Murtala Specialist Hospital, and is also aimed at strengthening the capacity of these facilities to actively monitor, detect, and report adverse drug reactions (ADRs), ensuring improved patient outcomes and safer use of medicines.

The statement reads:

“In line with the National Pharmacovigilance Policy and Implementation Framework (2020), NAFDAC continues to promote the integration of robust pharmacovigilance systems across healthcare facilities in Nigeria.

“On April 23, 2025, a team of NAFDAC Officers paid an advocacy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Kano State, to announce the commencement of pharmacovigilance assessments in selected health facilities.
