Tennis fans witnessed drama at the US Open in New York after American tennis player Taylor Townsend and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko got involved in an altercation following their match this week.
Townsend, who advanced to the next round, told reporters that Ostapenko hurled insults at her during their post-match exchange.
“She told me I have no education, no class… and to see what happens if we play each other outside of the US,” Townsend said.
“And I said, I’m excited, bring it. I didn’t take it in that way, but also there has been a stigma in our community of being not educated.”
The 29-year-old added that her focus remained on performance rather than the confrontation.
“The thing that I am most proud of is that I let my racket talk because ultimately, I’m the one here sitting in front of you guys, moving on to the next round, getting the next check, and that’s what’s most important. She’s packed up, she’s gone, I’m here.”
