Before former Speaker Meranda’s resignation, the formerly impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, had held meeting with some lawmakers including Meranda, outside the chamber.
The meeting later split into two groups, with Obasa and Meranda holding separate discussions with Lawal Pedro, the Lagos Attorney General, and Cornelius Ojelabi, the state’s APC chairman.
Obasa has maintained that the process leading to his removal as Speaker on January 13 was fundamentally flawed.
Moments after the meeting, Mojisola Meranda, announced her decision to resign as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, 49 days after swearing-in.
She made the announcement on Monday, 3rd of March 2025, during the ongoing plenary session.
Meranda explained that her resignation was a selfless decision made in order to safeguard the integrity of the legislative institution.
She said:
“Please permit me dear colleagues to restate the position I previously expressed in a lead publication wherein I stated as follows: ‘It is with every sense of responsibility that I hereby give you notice of my decision to resign as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly with effect from today 3rd of March 2025”.
