In a startling event in Lunzu, Blantyre, Malawi, authorities successfully rescued an infant girl who had been buried alive by her 21-year-old mother, Olivia Jonas.
The incident came to light when Olivia, who was eight months pregnant, secretly gave birth to the baby girl at home on August 1, 2023, and then concealed the act by burying the child in a nearby area without informing anyone.
She even deceived her husband, telling him she had experienced a miscarriage. However, nurses at Mlambe Hospital became suspicious and questioned her, leading to her eventual confession about the buried child.
Thanks to the prompt response of the Lunzu Police Unit and medical officers from Kadidi Health Centre, the baby girl was found alive and in good health after being exhumed from the burial site pointed out by Olivia.
Currently, Olivia remains hospitalized and is expected to face charges related to concealing the birth of the child.
