In a joint effort between the Anambra State Government and the State Police Command, approximately 12 females, including three underaged girls, were rescued from a brothel in Awka. The operation took place on Monday, June 19, 2023, following a tip-off from a whistleblower.
The raid targeted the Happiness Guest Inn located in Amawbia. Hon. Ify Obinabo, the State Commissioner of Women and Social Commissioner, confirmed the successful operation on Tuesday in Awka. She stated that the underaged girls have been taken to a hospital for medical examination and necessary treatment.
Hon. Obinabo, through a statement released by her media aide, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, reiterated the state government’s commitment to ending all forms of child kidnap, trafficking, and sexual slavery within the state.
The commissioner also warned hotel owners against employing underage girls for their establishments, emphasizing that such actions would be met with legal consequences. She further assured the public that the case had received the attention of the Governor and would be treated seriously.
The underaged girls, who are all from Ebonyi state, recounted their harrowing experiences. They revealed that they were taken from their homes in Izza by two women named Ifeoma and Chika, who promised them employment opportunities in Awka. However, upon arriving at the brothel, they were forced into prostitution against their will.
Their personal belongings, including their phones, were confiscated by the women who brought them to the brothel. The girls were then handed over to another woman identified as Ezenwannyi, who informed them that they would only be released if they paid 150,000 naira or served her for a year.
Using a whistleblower’s phone, the girls managed to contact their families, who subsequently notified the Ministry of Women Affairs. With the assistance of the police, the ministry swiftly orchestrated the rescue operation, resulting in the liberation of the girls from the brothel.
The underaged girls disclosed that they were compelled to earn between 10,000 and 15,000 naira per night and 40,000 naira every Sunday. Additionally, each customer they slept with was expected to pay a fee of 1,000 naira or more, leading to conflicts with their madam.
Mrs. Uchechi Friday, one of the parents of the rescued girls, expressed gratitude for the prompt response of the Commissioner and urged other parents to remain vigilant regarding their children’s well-being and whereabouts.
Following the rescue operation, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a thorough investigation. Subsequently, charges will be filed against the individuals involved, and they will be brought before the court to face justice.
