Mass Protests Erupt In Kano Over Government Demolition Exercises

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Kano on Monday to voice their dissatisfaction with the ongoing demolition operations carried out by the state government.

The protesters expressed their concerns as the government continued to tear down structures, while many others were marked for future demolition.

According to reports from the Daily Trust, the government justified its actions by claiming that the affected structures were constructed on land that had been “illegally” allocated by the previous administration.

Notable demolitions already completed include the multi-billion Naira project at the old Daula Hotel, shopping plazas at the Polo Ground and Eid ground. Additionally, residential and commercial buildings in the Salanta area and BUK road have been marked for demolition.

While the government remains steadfast in its commitment to “restore” the Kano Urban Development Masterplan, which involves removing structures built on public spaces, the protesters who gathered early Monday demanded a reversal of the government’s decision.

Displaying posters with messages such as “Gov Yusuf, your action is sending away investors,” “Don’t bring insecurity to our state, Mr. Governor,” and “Let the law take its course,” among others, the demonstrators first congregated at the demolished Daula Hotel before proceeding to the police headquarters to lodge their grievances.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Comrade Zahraddeen Sani Baba of the Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative urged the current governor to address any issues he may have with his predecessor by summoning him to answer questions, rather than punishing innocent Nigerians and destroying their investments. The protesters called for a reconsideration of the government’s demolition plans and emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law.
