On Tuesday, 7th May 2024, the Cross River State High Court in Calabar handed a life imprisonment sentence to a 25-year-old man for raping an 8-year-old girl.
Justice Blessing Egwu, in her verdict, declared that the convict, Mr. Aniedi Mfon, lacked conscience.
Justice Egwu expressed distress over the prevalent issue of child defilement in society.
She also ruled that a fine of N1 million should be paid to the survivor, whose identity was not disclosed.
Sources confirmed that Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ededem Ani; the Principal Counsel of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), Barr. James Ibor; and the Prosecutor, Patience Emmanuel Akpama were involved in facilitating the prosecution.
Responding to the situation, Barr. James Ibor stated that the survivor’s father faced intimidation and attempts to offer bribes in order to withdraw the case, but he stood firm.
