Six final-year nursing students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have died in a tragic road accident while travelling to sit for their final examinations.
The students all 500-level candidates in the Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme were heading to Ogbomoso, Oyo State, for what was meant to be the concluding stage of their academic journey. Among them was a student reported to be heavily pregnant at the time of the crash, deepening the sorrow surrounding the incident.
Their bodies have since been deposited in a mortuary, pending autopsy and further directives from authorities.
The tragedy has cast a heavy pall over the university community and beyond. According to SaharaReporters, the victims were practicing nurses balancing hospital duties, academic demands, and family responsibilities.
Classmates who expected to reunite with them in the examination hall are now grappling with shock and disbelief.
At the time of this report, LAUTECH management had not issued an official statement on the accident. Authorities, including the Oyo State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps, are yet to release details on the crash.
The incident has renewed concerns over the frequency of road accidents in Nigeria, with poor road conditions often cited as a contributing factor.
