Lagos Lôst N19.52bn to Fîre in 2024 — Governor Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed concern over recurring tanker fire accidents, revealing that the state lost property worth ₦19.52 billion to fire incidents in 2024. Speaking at the Lagos State International Fire Safety Conference 2.0 in Victoria Island.

He stressed the need for innovative measures, including the “Safety on the Move” initiative and community sensitisation, to curb the menace.

The conference, organised by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), brought together stakeholders to explore ways of enhancing fire prevention and emergency response.

LSFRS Director, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that while property worth ₦117.12 billion was saved from destruction in 2024, the agency recorded 1,952 fire incidents, rescuing 450 victims alive and recovering 91 dead bodies. She added that 831 commercial premises failed to comply with fire safety codes.

Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to using technology and public engagement to prevent fire disasters.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to stay vigilant, detect early fire hazards, and adopt safety measures, describing fire safety as a collective responsibility.
