The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed dedication to maintaining a clean and healthy environment despite facing challenges from individuals who deliberately litter and engage in open defecation.
In a recent statement, the government acknowledged the launch of an anti-open-defecation team, tasked with monitoring specific areas of Lagos and ensuring residents and visitors utilise public toilets
This team is to monitor specific areas to prevent open defecation and as well Raise awareness about the importance of environmental hygiene and the risks associated with open defecation.
In a statement on the X handle of the Lagos Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Saturday, 5th of April 2025, the Lagos government emphasised that environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility, requiring the active participation of all residents.
The statement reads:
“Environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility, and we must all play our part to keep our surroundings clean and safe – this have always been one of our messages to the people and you have exemplified that.
“As government, we put in the work but it seems as though a few individuals choose to be badly behaved and deliberately keep the environment untidy.
“Recently, the Lagos state government launched an Anti-Open-Defecation team to monitor some parts of Lagos, making sure residents and visitors make use of the public toilets provided in different locations across the state. A total of 1,710 (not counting those in filling stations statewide).
“#followlasg under the #jidesanwoolu led administration is committed to a cleaner, healthier Lagos – regardless of how politicized our efforts may be by those who choose not to see the bigger picture.
