Lagos Court Sentences Man to 13 Months’ Community Service for Multiple Sanitation Crïmes

A Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos, has handed down a 13-month community service sentence to 48-year-old Makinde Rasaq for a series of serious sanitation violations.

Rasaq was arrested last week on Lagos Island while he was illegally transporting refuse in a Honda SUV. He pleaded guilty to all seven charges brought against him.

The Specific Offences
The charges included:

· Breach of public peace
· Indiscriminate dumping of refuse
· Failure to use government-accredited Private Sector Partnership (PSP) waste operators
· Illegal transportation of waste without a valid license
· Obstruction of government officials performing their duties

The Sentence and Suspected Motive
The court combined multiple prison terms, offering community service as an alternative, resulting in a total sentence of 13 months to be served at the Kirikiri facility.

Rasaq was initially apprehended on Saturday night while dumping waste in the Tinubu Fountain area of Central Lagos. Authorities investigating the case suspect he may be part of a larger syndicate deliberately spreading garbage across strategic parts of the state with the apparent intent to create a negative public perception that Lagos is unclean.
