Olukayode Victor Olusola, a student at Government Secondary School, a public secondary school in Omu Aran, Kwara State, obtained 362 points in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), placing him in the running to be the exam’s top scorer.
Prof. Isaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, or JAMB, had stated that the Board will not reveal the top scorer in order to prevent the confusion caused by claims last year, but Olukayode’s score is noteworthy because it is among the highest in recent memory.
He received 77 in English language and 95 in each of mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
His exploit happens in the context of candidates’ dismal exam results, when 1.4 million candidates received fewer than 200 out of 400 points. Approximately 1.8 million applicants took the test.
Olukayode’s outstanding achievement also coincides with a period of declining trust in the quality of education provided by public schools, with some private institutions claiming to be the most costly in the nation. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
