At a recent private screening of his film, celebrated director Kunle Afolayan shared personal reflections on family, heritage, and the unconventional path that defined his upbringing.
The filmmaker stated that he stays grounded by remembering his origins. “Whenever I look around, I see my father everywhere,” he said, crediting his father as the foundation for both his KAP Village project and his own identity.
Afolayan revealed he is the seventh child in a very large family, explaining that his father had relationships with, or was married to, numerous women—a number he himself is uncertain of. While acknowledging this lifestyle is often criticised, he affirmed it as his personal reality.
In a statement that sparked reactions from the audience, Afolayan advised men to marry, or at least be involved with, many women. He argued simply that if his father had not lived that way, he (Kunle) would not exist.
Despite the complicated family dynamics, he noted that a core group of his siblings are now dedicated to upholding and advancing their father’s legacy. He concluded with a reminder of life’s brevity and the importance of never forgetting one’s roots.
