The Kano house of assembly has repealed the law that created five emirates in the state.
During plenary on Thursday, the legislators passed the amended sections of the Emirate Council Law 2019.
The new measure dissolves all offices established under the repealed law, and all district heads nominated or promoted under the repealed law must take up their prior roles.
A major legislative amendment is coming in the form of the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, sponsored by Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader representing the Dala Constituency. After former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje gave his initial approval on December 5, 2019, changes were made on October 14, 2020, and April 11, 2023.
Five separate emirates were formed by Section 3(1) of the law: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. Each emirate had control over several local government regions.
With the House of Assembly’s consent, the governor may designate an emir’s position as first, second, or third class under Section 12.
Speaking anonymously, a key assembly officer reaffirmed the assembly’s resolve to change the law in spite of any challenges. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
