A law mandating the nation to play the previous National Anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee,” was passed by the House of Representatives.
The bill sponsored by the leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbare, was presented for a second reading on Thursday, May 23, considered at the committee of the whole, approved and read for the third time.
Peoples Democratic Party member Chinda stated in his presentation that Nigeria should not contemplate adopting the previous national anthem since it is a remnant of colonialism.
Mr. Ahmad Satomi, the member for Borno State’s Jere Federal Constituency, backed his position.
However, Ahmed Jaha, a different Borno legislator, backed the measure, claiming that the new anthem’s lyrics are merely poetic sentiments with no bearing on Nigerian state matters.
