Judith Suminwa Tuluka, the planning minister for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was named the country’s first female prime minister on Monday .
The economist succeeds Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde as prime minister after President Felix Tshisekedi won reelection with overwhelming support on December 20.
The “task is big, the challenges are immense but together… we will get there,” Tuluka declared on national television.
“I am aware of the great responsibility that is mine,” she added, saying she wanted to work “for peace and development” so that the “Congolese people can benefit from the resources” of the country.
Tshisekedi officially triumphed with 73.47 per cent in the December vote and the vote passed largely peacefully in a country long torn by violence and instability.
The opposition called the election a fraud. Logistical bottlenecks forced an official one-day extension of the voting period, and in some outlying locations, polls remained open for days beyond. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
