Israel-Hamas Crisis: 120 Incubator Babies at Risk in Gaza – UNICEF

More than 120 newborn infants in incubators in Gaza’s hospitals face a dire situation as the city runs out of fuel due to the ongoing conflict, according to the United Nations Children’s agency, UNICEF.

Jonathan Crickx, a spokesperson for UNICEF, expressed grave concern, stating, “We currently have 120 neonates in incubators, including 70 who rely on mechanical ventilation, and this is where our utmost worry lies.”

Freshreporters News gathered that the health ministry in the Palestinian territory disclosed that over 1,750 children have lost their lives in Israeli strikes launched in response to Hamas attacks on October 7.

The conflict escalated when Israel imposed a full blockade on the territory following the October 7 attacks, resulting in the deaths of 1,400 people, primarily civilians, as reported by Israeli officials.

The Israeli authorities’ concerns revolve around the possibility of fuel aiding Hamas, even though the limited remaining supplies in Gaza are being redirected to power generators for critical medical equipment.

The situation is further exacerbated as seven specialized units in Gaza, responsible for caring for premature babies and providing essential life support, are experiencing power shortages.

In the midst of widespread electricity cuts, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning that hospitals have already exhausted their fuel supplies for generators.

The WHO also highlighted that about 1,000 individuals in need of dialysis treatment would be at risk if the generators ceased to function.

Despite the arrival of twenty aid trucks from Egypt into Gaza on Saturday, none of them carried fuel.
