The proscribed separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has once again distanced itself from the recent wave of violent enforcement of sit-at-home orders in the South-East region of Nigeria.
In a statement released by the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Friday, IPOB condemned the Nigerian Army’s claims linking them to the incessant sit-at-home orders and subsequent enforcement.
IPOB emphasized that if the Federal Government genuinely desires to put an end to insecurity in the South-East, it should unconditionally release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention as mandated by the courts.
The group stated that it had consistently disassociated itself from Simon Ekpa and his followers, who are allegedly responsible for the enforcement of the sit-at-home orders.
“The Army Chief, Taoreed Lagbaja, cannot feign ignorance of the numerous press releases issued by IPOB, under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, clearly distancing ourselves from Simon Ekpa and his criminal sit-at-home enforcers,” Powerful stated.
IPOB further clarified that Simon Ekpa and his group were not affiliated with IPOB and did not represent Nnamdi Kanu in their enforcement of the sit-at-home orders.
The separatist group emphasized that it has repeatedly made its position clear regarding the sit-at-home strategy, which it described as reckless and abusive.
The statement urged the Federal Government and its security agencies to adhere to the ruling of the Appeal Court of Nigeria in Abuja and release Nnamdi Kanu without conditions.
IPOB claimed that Kanu’s continued detention only provided an opportunity for criminal elements to exploit the situation and perpetrate crimes in the region.
IPOB cautioned the Army Chief against using excessive force against the people of the South-East under the guise of apprehending sit-at-home enforcers.
The group also called on the government not to repeat the mistakes of past administrations. Additionally, they made a specific mention of the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging it to take a different approach in addressing the situation.
