The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the situation regarding a letter circulating, which suggested that it had withdrawn its appeal against the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s decision to remove Abba Kabir Yusuf as Kano State Governor.
According to Barrister Suleiman Alkali, the Head of the Legal Department in Kano, who signed the letter, it was the tribunal secretariat that requested INEC to write the letter.
Alkali explained that the letter was issued at the tribunal’s request, and it has since been withdrawn, meaning it no longer holds any legal validity.
An anonymous official at the tribunal registry also confirmed that they never received the letter and suggested that any claim of submission should be backed by an acknowledged copy.
They emphasized that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of their head office in Abuja.
