INEC Chairman Vows Arrest of Vote Buyers in 2027, Collaborates with Police and EFCC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amupitan, has issued a strong warning against vote buying in forthcoming elections, declaring that such electoral malpractice will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Amupitan disclosed that the Commission has activated preventive and enforcement mechanisms in collaboration with key security agencies to detect and prosecute individuals attempting to buy votes.

“We have directed the Nigeria Police and the EFCC to arrest vote buyers during the election. This concern has also been flagged by a committee, given the high risk of security violence that is likely to occur,” he said.

He further explained that the Commission’s actions are based on credible, evidence-based intelligence. “We are doing all these because we have been presented with evidence-based information, and we are not going to take it for granted. We will share it with our security partners so they can take the necessary steps they ought to take,” Amupitan added.
