Indian worshippers throw fîre at each other as part of a Temple rïtual

In a dramatic display of devotion, worshippers in Mangalore, southern India, are seen in a now- viral video observing the centuries-old fire ritual known as ‘Agni Keli’ or ‘Toothedhara’ as part of the annual Durga festival.

Held on the second day of the eight day celebration at the Kateel Durga Parameswari Temple, the unique tradition involves devotees hurling lit torches made from dried coconut fronds at one another.

The ritual, deeply rooted in local mythology and religious belief, is performed to appease the Hindu goddess Durga.

According to reports, Durga once battled demons that had ravaged humanity in the region.

One of such demons, Raktha Beejasura, was said to multiply with every drop of his blood that touched the earth. To defeat him without spilling blood, the goddess used divine fire.

Participants divide into two groups, standing about 30 to 50 feet apart, and take turns throwing burning palm frond torches at one another in a symbolic battle.
