Nigerian Veteran entertainer and activist, Charly Boy, has refuted claims of tribal bias, stating that accusations labelling him a tribalist are baseless and misinformed.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV, Charly Boy emphasised his longstanding relationships with Nigerians across ethnic lines, noting that the majority of his close friends and beneficiaries of his charitable work hail from western Nigeria.
“It’s funny when people try to shade me as a tribalist.
“Do you know that most of my friends are Yoruba. I have more Yoruba and Hausa friends than I have Igbo friends. The people who have benefited from the Charly Boy Foundation are mostly westerners.”
He described himself as a “free spirit” who does not see tribe or religion.
“When people bring tribal colouration into what I do, I resent that. There’s no truth in it. That’s a whole lot of jargon if you ask me,” he added.
Charly Boy also criticised Nigeria’s political class, questioning why ethnicity only becomes relevant during elections.
“When they want to do the stealing and be as corrupt as sin, you find the Igbo man, the Yoruba man, and the Fulani man all in the same place chopping money. But when it’s time for elections or for us to talk about how we move on, politically, you start seeing these things”
