I’m Not A Thief – Sen Orji Kalu Says As He Breaks Down In Tears (Video)

In a poignant moment during the valedictory session of the ninth Senate, the outgoing Chief Whip, Senator Orji Kalu, couldn’t hold back his emotions as he addressed his colleagues. Kalu broke into tears as he recounted his ordeal in an alleged N7.1 billion fraud case and expressed his grievances about the unfairness faced by many in Nigeria.

Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia State, had previously been found guilty and convicted of money laundering amounting to N7.1 billion in December 2019. Alongside a former director of finance and accountant, Ude Jones Udeogu, Kalu was serving a 12-year prison term when the Supreme Court overturned the convictions in 2020, citing procedural errors in the proceedings.

During his emotional speech, Senator Kalu vehemently denied the accusations leveled against him, claiming that he had been falsely labeled a thief by entities who conspired against him. He expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal and for his colleagues’ unwavering support during his time in the Senate.

Before entering politics, Kalu highlighted his successful business ventures and financial prosperity, asserting his innocence and proclaiming, “I’m not a thief.” He further alleged that those responsible for his imprisonment had ulterior motives, as they seized control of his businesses and even attempted to harm him physically.

Kalu also made reference to his past contributions to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he had played a pivotal role in its formation by providing the financial resources in 1997 and 1998. However, he expressed his disappointment that he was later vilified and portrayed as a criminal despite his prior contributions.

Expressing his gratitude to his fellow senators for their support throughout his tenure, Senator Orji Kalu concluded his speech by asserting that Nigeria had been unfair to many individuals, including himself.
