Residents of Ilaje Road in Bariga, Lagos, staged a protest on Wednesday against the renaming of their historic street after music icon King Sunny Ade.
The protesters, led by community leaders, condemned the move as an attack on their cultural identity.
The protest, which took place today, Wednesday, drew large crowds who described the renaming as a disregard for their heritage and an attempt to erase their history.
It was reportedly approved by outgoing LCDA chairman, David Kolade Alabi, despite prior objections.
Protesters submitted a formal petition, with Baale Kayode Ayetiwa revealing that the new chairperson, Bukola Adedeji, had promised to reverse the decision.
Egbe Omo Ilaje president, Raphael Irowanu, described the act as unconstitutional and marginalising. He warned that continued disregard for Ilaje concerns could affect APC’s chances in the 2027 polls.
