Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has made it clear that he will not accept a ministerial appointment from President Bola Tinubu, despite his support for Tinubu’s presidential bid.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealed that he worked against his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the February 25, 2023 election.
When asked if he would reject a ministerial offer from President Tinubu, Fayose emphatically stated, “I will never accept it.” He went on to urge Tinubu to appoint individuals below the age of 65 and ask those between 65 and 70 years old to nominate younger candidates.
Fayose expressed his belief that the future of young people has been stifled by older politicians and emphasized the need to provide opportunities for the youth.
Explaining his decision to support Tinubu, Fayose cited his belief in Tinubu’s leadership and not any personal interest in securing an appointment. He also addressed the issue of his strained relationship with the PDP, stating, “Do you expect me to work for a party that suspended my son? A party that expelled my son?… I never worked for PDP during the last election. There’s no reason to hide that.”
Fayose’s visit to Tinubu at Aso Rock last week raised speculation about the motive behind the meeting. However, he dismissed rumors suggesting that it was related to his ongoing case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Fayose clarified that Tinubu has no influence over his legal proceedings and stated that he would refrain from commenting on the matter as a defendant.
With these remarks, Fayose has made his stance clear on the possibility of accepting a ministerial position from President Tinubu, prioritizing his principles and the aspirations of the younger generation over personal gain.
