Howard University has revoked the honorary degree conferred on veteran American rapper and music executive, Sean Combs, popularly known as Diddy.
The university decided on a unanimous vote by its Board of Trustees stating that the honorary degree given to Diddy in 2014 is “no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honour,” Freshreporters Media gathered.
This comes as a result of multiple sexual assault charges against Diddy and the emergence of a video showing the rapper assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, in a hotel, behaviour that the university deemed incompatible with its core values.
Revoking the degree, the Varsity board said,
“This acceptance revokes all honours and privileges associated with the degree. Accordingly, the Board has directed that his name be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University,” adding that “Mr. Combs’ behaviour as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honour,” the Board added.
Diddy, a former student at Howard, dropped out after two years in 1990. He received the honorary doctorate and served as commencement speaker in 2014.
The university said it would return Combs’ $1 million contribution and terminate a $1 million pledge agreement from the Sean Combs Foundation. [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>>
