How Seyi Law, Ali Baba Stopped Me From Winning N1.5million Grand Prize Comedy Audition In 2017 – Dr. Mazi, UNIPORT Lecturer Recounts

Dr. Mazi Eze, a celebrity lecturer from the university of Portharcourt has recounted how Ali Baba, Seyi Law screened him out in his early years when he opted for a comedy audition.

The celebrity lecturer made this in a post via his Facebook handle on Wednesday, 25th of June, 2024

β€œThis is my Story: Ali Baba, Seyi Law, Akas Baba, etc screened me out of a comedy audition and stopped me from winning the
Grand Prize of 1.5 Million Naira at stake!

Now, how did it happen?

On Saturday 21 October 2017, I took part in an audition called COMEDY CENTRAL & MALTINA’s GRAB THE MIC AUDITION.

That afternoon, when I got on stage, the judges asked me to briefly introduce myself.

I did.

They didn’t believe that I was a lecturer at the Department of English, Uniport.

I mean, a lecturer coming for a comedy audition?

It didn’t make sense to them.

At all!

Thanks to OAP Akas Baba (one of the Audition Judges) who convinced them that I was indeed the super duper #CelebrityLecturer.

You know, earlier in the year, I had hired Akas Baba (who was then a Presenter in WAZOBIA FM) as the MC for the launch of my book on how to overcome fear and speak with confidence.

The title of the book is PUBLIC SPEAKING NUGGETS.

Akas Baba was simply amusing and amazing throughout the book launch.

That’s a story for another day, anyway.

Okay, while I was presenting my first joke during that comedy audition, the Panel of Judges stopped me abruptly.

They said my joke was too dry like okporoko (ie, stock fish)! πŸ€£πŸ˜€

Long story short: I was screened out unceremoniously in less than 5 minutes!

Hey, can you imagine?

The Panel of Judges screened ME out.
A whole ME!
*wide toothy smile πŸ˜€

As I type this, I remember some of the great men who served as the Panel of Judges on that day: Ali Baba, Seyi Law, Akas Baba, BukWild da Ikwerrian.

I searched on the net just now.

This is the advert that made me register for the audition in the first placeπŸ‘‡πŸΏ:

β€œIf you are an amateur comedian from Nigeria and you think you have what it takes to be the next comedic superstar and want to WIN the Grand Prize of 1.5 Million Naira and the chance to share the stage with Ali Baba, this is for you!”

Weeks to the D-Day, I rehearsed my jokes.

While I taught my students Communication Skills in English or Grammar and Composition, I told/performed the jokes in class.

All my students rolled on the floor laughing.

I had high hopes that I’d take home the Grand Prize!

However, Ali Baba, Seyi Law, Akas Baba, BukWild da Ikwerrian screened me out unceremoniously and stopped me from winning the
Grand Prize of 1.5 Million Naira at stake!

Ladies and gentlemen, can you imagine?

They stopped a whole ME after saying that my joke was too dry like okporoko (ie, stock fish)! πŸ€£πŸ˜€

Hehehe πŸ˜€πŸ€£
Hahaha πŸ˜‚πŸ€£
Hihihihi πŸ˜€πŸ˜‚

I’m laughing as I type this now but I was angry on that day.

I was downcast.

I shook my head a number of times and left the stage.

I forced a dry smile and went back to Unique Uniport.

Yes, I was already a lecturer then.” [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>>
