Nigerian filmmaker Biodun Stephen has shared a deeply personal account of her experience with female circumcision at the age of six and the lasting impact it has had on her life.
Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, Stephen recounted the procedure in vivid detail. “In my case, it was my grandma, because I remember I was six when I went for circumcision. Yes, I remember it vividly, the pain. Oh God,” she said, recalling the memory with striking clarity.
Describing the setting, she added, “That afternoon, it was a mat outside,” underscoring the stark environment in which the event took place.
Stephen also discussed potential long-term consequences, noting that the severity of the procedure can vary, and for some women, it may lead to difficulty in experiencing sexual pleasure or achieving orgasm later in life.
During the conversation, host Ife asked whether infidelity is a deal breaker in relationships. Stephen responded by explaining that while many may view it as unforgivable, she personally does not consider it a “deal breaker.” Instead, she believes in allowing consequences to unfold naturally. “I also believe the simplest punishment to give any man that has is to let him go. It’s too easy… because you see, you have to pay,” she said.
Her revelations have sparked widespread online discussion about childhood trauma, cultural practices, and their enduring emotional and psychological effects.
