House Of Reps Rejects Motion To Halt Fuel Price Increase, Votes For Investigation

In a decisive move on Wednesday, the House of Representatives turned down a motion aimed at halting the recent surge in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as Fuel, which has led to a nationwide uproar.

The proposed motion sought to revert to the previous price of N537 per liter, but it failed to gain enough support in the legislative body.

Instead, the House reached a consensus to launch a comprehensive investigation into the sudden spike in fuel prices and its subsequent impact on transport fares across the country.

This decision followed an acknowledgment by the House that an inquiry into the matter was essential to address the concerns of the Nigerian public.

The House emphasized that supporting the motion to stop the fuel price increase would potentially undermine the work of the investigative committee they have already committed to establishing. As such, they opted to prioritize the investigation over immediate price control.

The motion of ‘urgent public importance’ was presented by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, reflecting the gravity of the situation. In response, the House mandated the attendance of the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, along with oil marketers, before an ad hoc committee. Their appearance will be to provide necessary explanations regarding the causes and justifications for the recent price hike. (CONTINUE READING HERE)
