The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies on Friday rejected a delegation from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), insisting that only the Head of the National Office could address issues surrounding the ongoing examinations.
The committee dismissed the team, led by Senior Assistant Registrar Ambrose Okelezo, and gave WAEC a 24-hour deadline to ensure the appearance of the National Head before the committee.
Okelezo informed the lawmakers that the Head of National Office was occupied with overseeing the printing of examination materials and would be available to appear on Monday.
However, the committee declined the explanation, emphasising the urgency and seriousness of the concerns at hand.
Okelezo informed the committee that the Head of National Office had already held meetings with other officials to devise solutions to the ongoing issues.
He requested that the Head be allowed to appear before the committee on Monday to provide a comprehensive explanation.
Okelezo also admitted there had been delays and other challenges affecting the examinations.
However, the lawmakers remained dissatisfied with the response.
Hon. Awaji Abiante angrily said:
“He just told us he is not the right person to speak. Then why is he here? People in my village wrote exams at 12 a.m. or 1 a.m. Their question papers were even left with commercial drivers! This is incompetence.”
He also questioned the plan for computer-based tests, saying many schools lack computers and the knowledge to use them. [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>>
