Harry Maguire Vows To Stay And Fight For Place At Man Utd Despite Losing Captaincy

Harry Maguire has expressed his determination to remain at Manchester United and compete for his position in the team, despite his disappointment at being stripped of the captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag. The decision comes as Maguire’s role as a regular starter for the club has been called into question.

In discussions held on Sunday regarding his future at the club, Maguire was informed that he would no longer be serving as captain due to his reduced playing time. Bruno Fernandes, who assumed the captaincy last season, is expected to continue in that role.

Taking to Twitter, the England international confirmed Ten Hag’s decision while expressing his regret and assuring his support for the next captain. Maguire wrote, “After discussions with the manager today, he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me, and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”

Maguire’s stint as captain came to an end following Manchester United’s dismal 4-0 defeat to Brentford last August, with Fernandes taking over leadership responsibilities. The defender started only eight Premier League games last season, a significant drop from his previous consistent presence in the starting lineup prior to Ten Hag’s arrival.

Maguire also expressed his gratitude towards former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appointed him captain in January 2020 after the departure of Ashley Young. “Since the day I took on the role, three and a half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date,” he stated. He went on to thank Solskjaer and wished the next captain success while pledging his full support.

Although Maguire is determined to regain his place in the first team, he is reportedly being considered as a potential target by West Ham. The Hammers are seeking reinforcements after selling Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million. Despite this, Maguire has made it clear that he does not wish to leave United, as he believes he will still have opportunities to play, particularly with United’s return to the Champions League this season.

Ten Hag has recently favored Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his preferred defensive partnership, and Maguire also faced setbacks due to injuries last season, including playing through broken ribs at one point. However, the 30-year-old has been working hard over the summer, even training at former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho’s camp in Portugal.

Maguire remains confident in his ability to make an impact for both Manchester United and the England national team in the upcoming European Championship. United, on their part, have stated that they will not force him out but are open to offers for several players to balance their expenditures.

In other transfer news, Manchester United is reportedly nearing the completion of a deal to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana for a fee of around £41 million. The final details of the transfer fee and personal terms are currently being discussed between the clubs.
