In the early hours of Thursday, gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Umunze, a community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing three police officers.
Some shop owners closed their shops due to fear of stray bullets. The police spokesperson in Anambra State confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate.”
Security in Anambra State has deteriorated, with frequent attacks by armed persons targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities.
The Nigerian government has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region, but the group denies any involvement in the attacks.
