In a unfortunate incident, a Catholic priest named Joseph Azubuike has been abducted by gunmen in Ebonyi State, located in the South-east region of Nigeria.
The abduction took place on Monday, and three other individuals were also reportedly taken, although their names are currently unknown.
Father Azubuike serves as the parish priest of St. Charles Parish in Mgbaleze Isu, which falls under the Onicha Local Government Area of the state.
Mathew Opoke, the Chancellor of the Diocese, who is also a reverend father, confirmed the abduction in a statement.
According to Mr. Opoke, Father Azubuike was abducted in close proximity to his parish while returning from his pastoral duties.
The abductors have already established contact with the church and have demanded an undisclosed amount of money as ransom.
In light of these distressing events, the Chancellor has called upon the public to offer prayers for the safe and unconditional release of Father Azubuike from the hands of his abductors.
“The abductors are requesting a financial payment, but with the support of your prayers, we remain hopeful for their unconditional release,” Mr. Opoke stated in the released statement.
The situation is concerning and highlights the need for increased security measures to protect individuals who serve their communities. Our thoughts are with Father Azubuike, the three other abducted individuals, and their families during this difficult time.
