The Nigerian government, with the support of the International Organization for Migration, conducted an operation on Monday to bring back 139 Nigerian individuals who were irregular migrants and had been released from detention centers in Libya.
Ambassador Kabiru Musa, holding the title of Charge D’Affaires En Titre, shared in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja that the purpose of this effort was to ensure that no Nigerian is left stranded abroad due to migration-related violations.
According to Musa, the group of people being brought back includes 85 males, 51 females, two children, and one infant. They are expected to arrive at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Monday evening.
FRESHREPORTERS NEWS gathered that Musa emphasized that the Nigerian Mission in Libya, with the assistance of the IOM, successfully secured the release of these 139 Nigerian irregular migrants who had been held in detention centers in Libya. The mission also arranged for their safe return back to Nigeria.
He pointed out that this marks the third such operation carried out within the past month, illustrating the Federal Government’s commitment to making sure none of its citizens are left in a difficult situation abroad.
Musa highlighted that the 139 evacuees departed from Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli on a chartered flight designated as No. UZ 0189 on Monday afternoon. They are anticipated to reach Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Monday evening.
He further explained that their efforts extended beyond just bringing these individuals back; they also focused on educating them about the risks associated with irregular migration.
