Gov Sanwo-Olu warns against unapproved state coastline structures

Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed concerns over the rising number of unapproved structures along the state’s coastline.

According to a post on the Governor’s X handle, Sanwo-Olu warned that violations of planning regulations along the coastlines put lives at risk and undermine long-term value.

The post reads:

“Today, I went on an inspection tour of Ibeshe, Inagbe, Ilashe and other coastal communities.

“We observed several unapproved structures and clear violations of planning regulations. Too many buildings have been constructed without approval, in breach of planning laws and safety standards. These actions put lives at risk and undermine the long-term value of our coastline.

“The Ministry of Physical Planning and LASBCA will return for a full enumeration, after which we will take firm but fair decisions, regularising where possible, protecting local residents, and restoring order to the corridor.

“During the visit, I also inspected the 30MVA power station at Ilashe, which has now been handed over to EKO Disco. Once connected, it will supply electricity to homes in the riverine areas, a critical step in unlocking their economic and tourism potential.

“The Lagos coastline is one of our greatest assets and we owe it to future generations to safeguard it. We will correct past wrongs and work with communities to build a future that is safe, inclusive, and prosperous.”
