Ghana Sack Coach Chris Hughton After AFCON Group-stage Exit

The Ghana Football Association has announced the ouster of Chris Hughton, citing his inability to lead Ghana out of their AFCON group.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Ghana was leading Mozambique 2-0 in injury time and looked certain to qualify, but they ended up drawing 2-2 and are now officially eliminated from the competition.

Ghana was eliminated at the group stages for the second consecutive tournament on two points, while Egypt managed to secure an equally dramatic point in the other tie with Ghana.

In February 2022, Hughton, a former manager of Brighton and Newcastle United, began serving as a technical adviser for the four-time continental winners.

Taking over for Otto Addo, who resigned following Ghana’s dismal performance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they only managed one victory in three games and ended bottom of Group H.

Ghana was eliminated early from the group stage of the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon, and they suffered the same fate in Ivory Coast. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
